Sunshine State All Clean

March 2007 News

More than 3,000 volunteers showed up on the first Saturday of this month to clean up an estimated 67 tons of trash and debris from the waterways, rivers, canals and shorelines of Florida's Broward County.

March 3 marked the 30th anniversary of the Waterway Cleanup. The annual event is organized by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida and sponsored by numerous businesses throughout the county.

"Through this environmental initiative we not only clean our waterways, but also educate thousands of people about environmental responsibility and stewardship," said Gordon Connell, director of association services for MIASF, in a statement.

The Waterway Cleanup also serves as the kick-off event for the Great American Cleanup of Broward County, a Keep America Beautiful event coordinated locally by Broward Beautiful and Broward County Waste & Recycling's Adopt-A-Street Program.
